Planning for Postpartum with Journaling in Pregnancy

Happy Friday Moms! I hope you had a good week! I was busy but I feel like I’m getting into a good routine since the holidays.

One of my favorite self-care tools is journaling. It gives you a chance to reflect and check-in with yourself. A great time to start a journal is in pregnancy. It’s a time of such introspection and clarity about what is important to you. If you struggle with anxiety, journaling helps you to write it down, step back and look more objectively at what is happening. Whether you are intimately writing to yourself or one day plan to share it with baby, it’s fun to capture where you are now and what you imagine when the little one arrives!

In this week’s YouTube episode, I am sharing tips on getting started with journaling in pregnancy, 3 questions to prompt you to reflect and a great option for a pre-made Pregnancy Journal by @haydensears1 @askdrsears @drsearswellness I have the link to the book The Healthy Pregnancy Journal in the description of the YouTube video!

Energy for More Fuel and More Decision Making

I was looking for a healthy snack that was quick, full of protein and gave me my sugar fix! I found it!! Thanks @blessthismessblog for the recipe for these yummy Monster Cookie No-Bake Oatmeal Energy Balls! The kids and I had so much fun putting these easy, delicious energy balls together. There are so many varieties to pick from, you can add so many of your favorite flavors!

The great thing about healthy energy snacks is the boost they give you and you are not on a Sugar Spike Rollercoaster! The more energy you have, the better you can concentrate to make decisions in motherhood and feel less anxiety. You will loop less on your thoughts when you are clear headed. And, because fatigue leads us to get irritable and impatient, we need easy to grab snacks from the fridge to keep our fuel up!

How to Feel Good When Communicating

Have you walked away from a conversation and analyzed yourself for hours?? I have! πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Why did I say that? Why didn’t I say that? What did she mean?

Self-doubt and anxiety are tied into social anxiety – the fear of what others think. As moms, we often avoid asking for the help we need because of this fear.

Whether you are looping on what you said or what they said, you may feel very anxious, worried, insecure or inferior. Your NEGATIVE FILTER will dismiss all of the positive in the conversation and only focus on the negative (if there even are any!!πŸ˜‚)

Assert yourself. Assertive communication has all 3 parts: share your message DIRECTLY to the other person, be POLITE in your tone and gestures and be FIRM with what you are saying or asking for. We tend to get nervous and be wishy-washy, only leaving the other person guessing what you are saying or asking for. Then, unfortunately, you do not get your needs met because others cannot READ YOUR MIND. So, take time to be clear about your words and you will be more confident.

In last week’s YouTube video, I shared tips to cope with Anticipatory Anxiety – How to Cope with the Dread of Taking Baby Out in Public. I shared how assertive communication is important in telling others your boundaries and being clear about your wishes. The link to my YouTube Channel – Tranquility Moms.

Do you feel dread about bringing baby out?

In this episode, I share 4 ways that you can feel calm and confident the next time you get an invitation to bring baby over or you venture out into public with your fragile little one.

I post new YouTube videos each Friday for moms 🀱 and pregnant moms 🀰 coping with anxiety and motherhood stress, as well as ways to find your tranquility! 🌺

Worst Case Scenario

You may have gotten bad news or you sit in fear about getting bad news about your baby. While you wait, you jump to the worst case scenario possible. This works up so many emotions and feels draining! Yet, you don’t have all of the facts yet!

In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, we talk about Catastrophizing = You believe the worst case scenario is going to happen AND that you will not be able to handle it.

That second part is key, your own self doubt traps you in the anxiety loop.

In last week’s YouTube video, How to Manage Anxiety about Baby’s Health, I cover the best strategy to get a handle on this worst case scenario thinking using the 3 A’s – Awareness, Acknowledge and Action. You can take these steps to reduce the anxiety and calm yourself, in order to keep your energy for whatever circumstances or diagnosis may lie ahead for your child. You need to be calm and confident to help and advocate for your child in whatever medical situation they are in. Take a look at the YouTube video (link to Tranquility Moms channel) for more details and tips to manage your worst case scenario anxiety!

Healthy Banana Oatmeal Muffins

The kids and I made these healthy, delicious muffins! Yum, the house smelled soooo good! Thanks @momables for this Healthy Banana Oatmeal Muffins recipe! πŸ™ŒπŸ’—

We are all working to eat more healthy and cut out the sugar. These muffins were more dense and filling than the usual sugar and flour muffins we are used to. The kids, of course, said “They need chocolate chips!” πŸ˜‚

Sugar and anxiety do not go well together. Sugar gives you false spikes in energy and then you come crashing down, more irritable and uptight than usual. So, try healthy alternatives to meet your sweet craving!

Ok, tell me on Instagram – would you jump in at bedtime and have the muffins warm OR would you wait and know that breakfast is ready for the next morning?! πŸ˜ƒ

God Gives You Strength

There are moments or hours or days when things are NOT going smoothly as a mom. You feel so worn down, nothing seems to be working, no one is cooperating and you have ZERO fuel in your tank. You feel exhausted – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

As a mom, you need a lot of energy to keep going with the tasks, the decisions and having enough patience to keep giving to your family.

Are your anxiety thoughts sending you signals of PANIC? “I can’t do this!” 🀯

Take a look at your thoughts, you may be focusing on All or Nothing. I have to DO THIS ALL or you freeze up – I’M GOING TO DO NOTHING!

This is exactly when we need to pause as moms and pray. God, give me the strength. This passage from Philippians is a wonderful reminder – “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” The energy and patience cannot come from within your FUEL tank alone, you need God to walk along with you through the day.

Today, take one moment at a time. Do not let your Mom Anxiety tell you to PANIC. You can handle this!! Through your faith and prayer, you can do everything you need to do.

We are in motherhood together!

Mom Anxiety

Ever wonder where your doubts as a mom come from? We have so many decisions to make, so much to problem solve and most of the tasks we do are brand new to us. It’s overwhelming to think about how vital our role is when there is no instruction manual. What makes motherhood even more difficult is when you feel like you can’t make a decision or your thoughts are focused on failing, making a mistake, and getting it wrong!

Anxiety is our scanning system to find anything wrong or dangerous – physically or emotionally. So, at each decision or each bathtime or each doctor appointment – our Mom Anxiety starts pointing out what it believes we did wrong! Our ability as a mom is now completely doubted. We start to spin in doubts and feeling like a failure. This puts us into a FREEZE mode – we don’t want to do or decide anything now!

Your Mom Anxiety has a clever way of interrupting all of your Mom Confidence with thoughts like, “hmmmm, should you really do that? Is that the right choice? Are you doing it the right way? Will you regret that later? What will others think?”

That’s when we need our BIG RED STOP SIGN 🚫 – S.T.O.P. this is my Mom Anxiety telling me I can’t do it, I’m going to mess up and fail.

I need to focus on the FACTS – how long has this been going on, what do I observe, what is the pattern, who are my experts (Oh and don’t google – it never leads to calmness!). Then repeat to yourself, “I love my child so much, I am going to work to find the best answers based on what we know right now.” Once you have calmed your Mom Anxiety, you can think more clearly and listen to that amazing gut instinct you were given!

Peace be with you

If you ask a woman before she has kids: what it will be like with a baby, what type of mom will you be and how will you handle the stress? You may get a confident and enthusiastic answer, followed by fear and uncertainty.

It’s not that she doesn’t keep parts of that enthusiasm into her journey of motherhood, it’s that the hardships push you to limits you have never experienced before! 😩

If you are pregnant, you may be dreaming about the near future and how it will be. You may have heard war stories from experienced moms. It’s hard to picture what your experience will be like. There are so many variables, such as, how will your delivery go, if your baby feeds well, if you have consistent help, if your relationship has NO other stress going on, or if you are wired to be a worrier to begin with.

When I meet with pregnant moms or new moms in counseling, we talk about expectations. But most importantly, it is about learning how to be flexible with your expectations. My experience has been that the more rigid your expectations, the harder it is to cope with the reality.

So, to process life as it is vs what you had imagined it would be, you need to remove SHOULD from your thoughts. Each SHOULD leads to guilt and shame. No thanks!!

Try replacing your SHOULD in the statement:

πŸ‘ I should be happy every day as a Mom. Instead say to yourself, I can find joyful moments every day.

πŸ‘ I should enjoy caring for all of my baby’s needs. Instead say to yourself, I care for my baby with love and it is okay to ask for help when I need to.

πŸ‘ I should have all of the answers. Instead say to yourself, I am learning every day and will ask my experts if I am not sure.

As you shift your thoughts, you will find the peace and tranquility that comes with retraining your mind.
